Well, I can't actually figure out the story so I looked up in wikipedia for an explanation:
Apparently, the Shadow is the protector of the Orb, who has been chasing Daniel since he put it together. Alexander is an immortal being from another world ("home", the world he wants to get back to), and the monsters used to be his servants at the castle. So once Alexander finds out Daniel found the Orb he needed to get back "home", he tricked Daniel, telling him he would "free him" from the Shadow.

There are three endings, the good ending, where you live and knock over the pillars, the second good ending, where you throw in Agrippa's head and get yourself and Alexander killed, and the Bad Ending. The Bad ending is where you just stand there and watch Alexander go through the portal, and then you get killed by the Shadow.

1. put agrippas head
2. destroy those collumns with purple electricity ( or whatever are they called)
3. wait until shadow kills you

Wrong.
The Shadow consumes you in the Special ending (Agrippa's ending)
Weyer is powerful enough to challenge the Shadow, and will be able to save Daniel sooner or later.
